Honda Recalls SUVs and Pickup Trucks Because Hoods Can Fly Open at High Speeds

Honda recall

Honda is issuing an auto defect recall for nearly 789,000 SUVs and pickup trucks globally because the hoods could fly open when the vehicles are in motion, increasing the risk of an accident. According to a CBS news report, the recall covers certain 2019 Passports, 2016-2019 Pilots, and 2017-2020 Ridgeline pickup trucks.

Details of the Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that gaps in the front seal between the hood and the grill allow air to enter, which could cause the hood to vibrate at highway speeds. Over time, such vibration could form stress fractures along the hood latch striker and separate it from the hood. A separated hood latch striker may allow the hood to open, obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the risk of a car accident.

The automaker has said motorists should pay attention to hood vibration noises or a loose hood as a potential warning that a hood latch striker could fail. When the recall begins in January, dealers will repair the striker or replace the hood, as necessary, at no cost to vehicle owners.

Honda will begin notifying owners started Jan. 17 via mail. The worldwide recall total is 788,931, with just over 725,000 vehicles in the United States. Owners can call any authorized Honda dealer to make an appointment for the repairs. Anyone with questions is asked to call Honda customer support at 1-888-234-2138.

Auto Product Liability Issues

Auto defects may occur during the manufacturing process or the vehicle design process. Regardless of when the defect occurs, it is the automaker’s duty and responsibility to issue a prompt safety recall and make the necessary repairs at no charge to consumers. Anyone affected by a defective auto can file a product liability claim against the automaker.

If you have been involved in a car accident, please preserve the vehicle in its current condition unaltered so an expert can examine it for defects, malfunctions, and design flaws. An experienced auto product liability attorney can advise victims and their families in such cases regarding their legal rights and options.
