Dressers Sold Exclusively at Costco Recalled for Tip-over and Entrapment Hazards

Costco

Samson International has recalled thousands of Cayden nine-drawer dressers because of potential tip-over and entrapment hazards. According to an alert posted on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall involves about 5,400 of Samson International’s Universal Broadmoor Cayden Gentleman’s 9-drawer chests. The chests are brown and measure about 49 inches tall, 55 inches wide, and 18 inches deep.

Details of the Recall

The recall was issued after a report of a tip-over incident involving a 10-year-old child. The nature or extent of the child’s injuries is not known. Consumers are urged to immediately stop using these recalled dressers if they are not properly anchored to the wall and place them in an area where children cannot access them. Consumers who have these products can call Samson for a full refund or to get a free tip-over restraint kit.

Samson will provide pre-paid shipping labels so consumers can remove the chest’s drawer slides and return them to the company for a full refund. They can also be returned to any Costco Warehouse for a full refund. The chests are made of wood and have manufacturing date codes between September 2019 and November 2019. The dressers were sold exclusively at Costco Wholesale Warehouses nationwide and online at costco.com from December 2019 through April 2020 for about \$700.

Dresser Dangers for Children

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), one person is injured about every 20 minutes, and one child dies about every two weeks when a piece of furniture, an appliance or a television falls on top of them. Tip-over accidents involving dressers alone have killed at least 212 people, most of them children 6 and younger.

No current government standard requires furniture manufacturers to test their products for stability before putting them on the market. All that exists is a voluntary industry standard. Recent news reports state that a new version of the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act (STURDY Act) is getting closer to becoming the law.

Suppose a dangerous or defective product has injured your child or a loved one. In that case, it is important that you contact an experienced product defect lawyer to obtain more information about pursuing your legal rights. Product manufacturers have a legal obligation to make products that are safe for consumers, and negligent manufacturers can and should be held accountable for their negligence. Families of deceased victims can also file a wrongful death claim seeking damages.
